Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) provides residents East of the Anacostia River access to the best-in-class facilities, programs and partnerships in arts and culture, economic opportunity, education, recreation, health and well-being. Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) envisions a future in which the residents East of the Anacostia River experience vital, thriving communities characterized by social, cultural, economic and racial equity. In order to combat past and current structural inequities, Building Bridges develops and manages facilities and programs in Wards 7 and 8 including the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), THEARC Farm, THEARC Theater, 11th Street Bridge Park, and Skyland Workforce Center. Building Bridges first facility was THEARC, which at 203,000 square feet represents the largest social service, multisector, nonprofit collaboration in the country.
The Program Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing 11th Street Bridge Park programming initiatives, artists-led initiatives, and special events, ensure new and annual programming aligns with goals laid out in the Bridge Park’s cultural equity strategies, commitment to residents and artists east of the Anacostia River.
Principle Responsibilities:
PROGRAMMING
- Lead in creation, planning, logistics, partner communication, and execution of Bridge Park cultural programming (ex: Taste of the Harvest, Anacostia River Festival, cooking classes, etc.) and other public events (in person and virtual.) Duties include management of budgets for cultural programming; develop program timelines; selection, communication with and management of partners, contractors and artists; drafting contracts for artists and contractors; coordinate with National Park Service points of contact during the planning of Park related programs; collaboration with Senior Communications and Community Engagement Manager on deliverables for programming
- Develop programming ideas and plans in collaboration with the 11th Street Bridge Park team that meet project goals, the Equitable Development Plan and recommendations laid out in the cultural equity strategies
- Activation of six urban gardens (Bridge Park Plots) through art interventions and programming
- Manage logistics and program support for artist-led programming that supports the Equitable Development Plan’s Cultural Equity Strategies
ENGAGEMENT
- Attend cultural and community events to meet local artists, develop new partnerships, understand creative economy and build relationships with arts community and civic leaders
- Attend community and civic meetings to build relationships and share Bridge Park updates
- Attend Building Bridges Across the River partner meetings to identify opportunities for collaboration and to share Bridge Park events
VOLUNTEERS
- Recruit and manage volunteers for signature Bridge Park events such as annual Anacostia River Festival and Taste of the Harvest event
- Engage 11th Street Bridge Park volunteers by creating consistent engagement opportunities that build champions of the project
- Create new partnerships with volunteer groups and organizations to support 11th Street Bridge Park programming
Qualifications:
- Knowledge about the Ward 8 community and a strong interest & understanding of the culture/legacy/traditions/history of African American communities in Washington, DC to ensure programming meet the needs and desires of the community.
- Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Must be comfortable with public speaking and one-on-one conversation
- Must be available on weekends & evening
- Must be comfortable getting around the DC region
- Exhibits good interpersonal skills; collaborates with others; maintains composure when faced with challenging situations and personalities
- Physical ability to stand for multiple hours and lift or move 40-pound objects
